News24.com | Avatar sequel is now the seventh biggest movie in history

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water is now the seventh biggest movie in history in the US.

According to AFP, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday that the sequel had led the box office for four weeks and has amassed domestic earnings of $516.8 million and $1.19 billion internationally.

Variety reports The Way of Water is now the fifth highest-movie at the international box office behind Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic and Avengers: Infinity War.

About the success of the film, the 68-year-old told CNN’s Chris Wallace last week: “It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels.

“I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.”

Cameron shared that Avatar 3 is ‘already in the can’ and that they have ‘already captured and photographed the whole film.’

“Avatar 4 and 5 are already written. We even have some of 4 in the can,” he added.

In 2020 Disney released prospective dates for the sequels following Avatar 2 in 2022; the rest of the films are staggered to be released in 2024, 2026 and 2028.
