Stormers coach John Dobson has committed his long-term future to the Cape franchise.

Dobson has signed a four-year contract extension which will see him remain at the helm until at least 2027.

After coaching UCT in the early days of Varsity Cup, Dobson joined the Western Province rugby structures in 2010. He won the national championship with the WP under-21 side and was appointed head coach of the senior WP team in 2015, winning the Currie Cup in 2017.

He became Stormers head coach in 2020 and steered the team to the inaugural United Rugby Championship (URC) title last year.

Dobson’s teams are renowned for playing an attractive, enterprising brand of rugby synonymous with WP teams of years gone by.

“I grew up in Cape Town as part of a rugby family, so this is a dream job for me and I wouldn’t want to coach anywhere else,” he said in a statement.

“I have been very lucky to be surrounded by an outstanding coaching and support team and I am very excited about what we can achieve together in the coming years.

“This is a special place and we have a very real connection with the people who support this team, which makes this such a stimulating and rewarding environment.

“The structures we have set up here and the continuous stream of talent coming through in the region will hopefully combine to put this team where it should be among the best in the world.”
